We left Central Bridge this morning about 8:30 for a 216 mile drive to Stowe, Vermont. New York has been a beautiful state to visit - not at all like we expected it to be. If you have the chance be sure to come to this part of the state. Our drive was pretty unveventful aside from the great scenery.
When we got to Vermont Jenna asked if I wanted her to drive. That was fine with me - now I could really do some rubber-necking. She drove about 70 miles through some very scenic country full of winding roads, steep inclines, and dramatic downhills - some up to 10% grades. She did a terrific job on what some would consider white knuckle roads. I know now why Vermont is called the Green Mountain State. The mountains everywhere are covered with green trees. We are beginning to see a little color - the greeens are paler and there are spots of orange and red.
After her 70 miles I drove the final 50 miles to Stowe. This morning I checked the propane tanks and thought they felt low. I decided that we might need to get the bottles filled before we set up in Stowe and pulled off the road in Montpelier to try to find a campground that sold propane - we had checked the campground in Stowe and they didn't. Jenna saw a sign for a campground and told me to turn on a road - which I dutifully did. That road led to nowhere and had a sign that said "Pavement Ends.". Not knowing where that might take us I proceeded to "try" to turn around. My truck is hard enough, but a U-turn on a 2 lane road while pulling a 32' 5th wheel is really fun! Just as I was getting close to negotiating the turn, a guy came up and said that if I followed the road one mile it would lead me back into Montpelier - what a relief. We gave up on the idea of getting propane and headed on to Stowe. Moral of the story: It helps to ask where the road goes before trying a turn-about on a narrow road. Turns out we didn't need the propane as both bottles were 1/2 full.
We arrived in Stowe, found the campground, met our Tailgunner and some of our fellow travelers, got the RV tech to check our furnace, and ended our day by watching the Cowboys beat New York. The RV tech couldn't fix the furnace on site so he took it with him - he hopes to have it back today or tomorrow. It got down to 38 last night but a small ceramic heater kept us warm, and the forcast is for warmer temps.
Today we plan to do some exploring. Orientation for our tour is tomorrow and then the fun begins - as if we haven't been having fun! Until next time - Happy Trails!
