Today was a free day to visit Cooperstown, the Baseball Hall of Fame, and the other museums in town Again today it was a rainy and cool with fog all around. Earl and Eunice rode with us into town. We parked next to the Doubleday Baseball Field which is just off the Main Street in Cooperstown. Two teams were warming up and getting ready to play a game. Doubleday Field was built in the 1920's and is a charming old style baseball stdium.
We walked a couple of blocks to the National Baseball Hall of Fame to begin our tour.
The Hall of Fame building is much smaller than I expected, but it was bigger than it looked inside.
First we watched a movie about - of all things - baseball! The theater was designed like a baseball stadium with the movie screen being the scoreboard. Stadium seats served as the theater seats and we ended the movie by singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." Linda, Lyle, Janice, Bill, Sherry, Ron, Janet, KenEarl, Eunice, Gilbert mug for Jenna before the movie.
We spent about 3 hours looking at baseball memorabilia.
It seemed to me that the majority of the museum was about the New York Yankees, but perhaps the fact that they have been such a dominating force in baseball gives that some credence. We visited the National Football Hall of Fame on our way up here, and Jenna and I agreed that it was more interesting, and in our opinion, better than the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Nelson Cruz' jersey was part of the Ranger's display. Go figure?
After lunch we did some souvenir shopping before coming back to the campground. At 5:30 we had a travel briefing followed by a birthday party for Janet and Janice - two of our traveling companions.
Janet and Janice are identical twins who not ony look alike, but dress alike, have the same motorhomes, cars, dogs, etc. Today is their 65th birthday and they celebrated by hosting all of us for dinner. They had chicken and ribs catered and Terri made all the fixin's for the dinner. It sure was good. Thanks to Janet, Janice, Bill and Ken.
Chocolate cake and ice cream completed the meal.
Tomorrow we are going to the Farmer's Museum and a few other sites in Cooperstown. Until then,
Happy Trails!
